Re: Pre 1880 Single Shot Breech Loading Shotgun ?

Model 1893 No. 3 Single Barrel Shotgun .................... On September 1, 1893, Remington Arms Company introduced an inexpensive, single-barrel shotgun to take the place of their Remington No.1 and No.2 rolling block shotguns. The new gun was a break-open design, activated by a top-lever, and had ...

Re: NMA serial number 107274---manufacturing date info reque

During October 1864, E. Remington & Sons shipped 4000 NMA revolvers to the U.S. Government against their contract of November 21, 1863. The serial number of your revolver, 107274, falls in the range of this production lot.

My congratulations on a fine looking reovlver.

Re: Remington 1858 New Model

Jon, Welcome aboard. While the Remington Society of America is able to assist in answering some of your questions, we do not have records on where or to whom a firearm was issued once it was accepted by the U.S. Government and/or left the Remington factory. The presence of the cartouche (stamping) o...

Re: 1858 44 Cal Revolver SN 60117/60107

Ronnie,

Interesting question and seeing as the manufacturing date is based on a serial number range, my belief is that it would not be changed by the addition of a few revolvers that didn't go to the Ordnance Dept.

Re: 1858 44 Cal Revolver SN 60117/60107

Ronnie, Now it's my turn to speculate. The absense of a cartouche can mean one of three things. A. Was not approved by Gov't Inspector for shipment. B. Cartouche was removed during the life of the revolver. C. Grips were changed during the life of the revolver. Unless you can establish provenance to...

Re: New Guy looking for help identifying a gun

In addition to the above, there is a tremendous article written by James Tipton, published in the 2nd Qtr 2000 issue of the Remington Society of America Journal which contains information gathered over nearly 45 years of enjoying and studying Model 11's. A copy of this issue can be had by going to t...

Re: 1858 44 Cal Revolver SN 60117/60107

Ronnie, The "U" stamps you show are factory in-process inspectors stamps. The Government final acceptance stamp is the cartouche that is stamped into the left grip. It is a 2 or 3 letter stamp of the initials of the Government inspector. In addition to this, the right grip may bear a carto...

Re: 1858 44 Cal Revolver SN 60117/60107

Ronnie, According to the research done by Don Ware and Slim Kohler of the RSA, if your Remington New Model Army Revolver bears the fianl acceptance cartouche from the Ordnance Department, it would have been part of the shipments made during March, 1864. That month saw shipments totalling 4000 pcs ma...

Jeff, Welcome aboard. Your revolver, Remington New Model Army, S/N 110327 falls in the serial number range for revolvers received by the Ordnance Department during November of 1864 as part of the contract issued to E. Remington & Sons dated November 21, 1863. The Cartouche "GP" is attr...

Re: Dating my 1858 new model navy serial#1498...

You are correct in placing your revolver outside the serial number range for the New Model Navy. While it is a .38 cal capping plate conversion, and a New Model, it is a New Model Police revolver. From Roy Marcot's book "Remington, America's Oldest Gunmaker" comes the following information...

Re: Dating 1858 Remington

I agree with your questioning. A Remington Navy Model revolver bearing serial number 1498 falls within the "Beals" model category. It would actually fall into the category for "pre-contract" revolvers that would have been purchased from commercial inventories, prior to the first ...
