Paul, you can be sure it is a Black Powder rifle. Problem with the breech sounds like it is hitting the firing pin on the way down, check that out.

There was a gunsmith in Denver by the name of Carlos Gove that modified several Rolling blocks in the late 1890"s with a under lever, I have a new one that was made by Lone Star Rifles, a very nice job.
