does this look like I might be on right trail?
Be on the right trail for what?
* You need to do a chamber cast to determine the caliber
* The extractor is missing
* Don't see a firing pin
What's the bore look like? If it is sewer pipe - don't recommend investing money in the rifle

Trivia Question - Rolling Block Receiver Sights Graduations

Which Rolling Block models had receiver sights that were graduated for meters?
I'm lead to think only those that were military sales to foreign countries like the 43 Spanish sold to Argentina. Any others?

Re: black powder question

I'm new to black powder shooting and I was wondering what powder do you all use in your cartridges. http://www.goexpowder.com/load-chart.html The charts are not specific to Goex granulations. Hodgdon got the data from Nobel Industries back in the '70's. It is the best comprehensive loading data the...

Re: Experiences Shooting a 450 or 500gr Bullet in a 50-70 #1

What kind of groups do you get at 100, 200 and 300 yards with the rifle? Matt, I don't remember. When I get good groups with a rifle, I snap a picture for reference or save the targets. Have no pictures so they had to be not stellar Overall, there had to be a lot of hail mary's and fire for effect ...

Re: Experiences Shooting a 450 or 500gr Bullet in a 50-70 #1

Matt - tis the same rifle that went to Michigan and for all the personal reasons, have never called or written the AG there for any archive data on the 2 shipments. Guess I better make it a To-Do because it would be nice to have an AG's report of the era for historical reference. OK, the #1 Musket 5...

Experiences Shooting a 450 or 500gr Bullet in a 50-70 #1 RB

Interested to hear experiences which weight bullet shoots better in a 50-70 #1 Rolling Block
Have shot the 450gr (1:20) to 1000yds with good accuracy. Before I cast some 500's, is it worth it and will accuracy will be better?

Re: 1879 Argentine factory overrun???

JV, I have a gun crank collecter friend (800 plus long arms) whose mother bought one for him as a kid from Bannermann in the late '40's or early '50's that had the markings scrubbed and was reblued. As for Neither firm reblued any Argentine rifles... Remington didn't either. In fact, I've never hear...

Re: 1879 Argentine factory overrun???

Charlie, 1st of all, the Argentine Infantry and Police did not do much shooting, so the bores on the 1879's were usually in plus condition. Anyway, they contracted for 43 Spanish and then decided they wanted 7mm's. So they surplused the 43's. The rifles went to 3 locations * Schuyler, Hartley, and G...

Re: No 1 (50-70) with No Remington Address or Patent Date?

* ...tang numbers are mismatch, the top is 19509 and the bottom is G 85365 - It was my understanding through Don Muno and my historian friend, Bill Roth, that the numbers were always the same. I'll get Don's telephone number and ask him about mismatches and get back to you with his answer. Matt: Ta...
