Those Remington autoloaders sure are a neat rifle. I believe you're correct that it's been refinished.

You have a Model 14. It looks to be in pretty decent shape, hope you enjoy the rifle as much or more than your grandfather did.

Now that’s a good looking rifle! Not only is it a carbine, but a C grade too. I imagine there’s few C & engraved carbines out there. I like that it has nice honest user wear especially for it’s age.
