Re: First hunting rifle: .243 or .308?

Jimmy, I'm guessing you're a 25 year old young man (by your user name) and can handle a little recoil. With those assumptions I would tell you that the 308 is the more versatile chambering and my recommendation for you. A lot has been said about the 270 and 30-06 already (which I agree with) so I'll...

Re: mod. 14 butt plate ?

I think that is the correct butt plate. There were a few different ones in the Model 14 and early Model 141s until they finally settled on the checkerd steel buttplate. There were three grades - Field, Premier and Peerless. If you have checkering on the wood but no metal engraving I think it's a Pre...

Re: Rem Mod 600 in 35 Rem

The 35 Rem is (also) a great caliber. It's perfect for deer and some said good for bear, moose and elk, in the old days. It used to be loaded hotter than it is today but factory loads are still available from Remington, Winchester and Federal. With a bolt action, you can easily handload up to its ol...

Re: reloading the 30 remington in a model 14

Caution is always best, I agree. The Lee Loader is handy because you don't need full sizing with either of these cartridges. Can you still get 30 Rem dies? The 30WCF has a different shoulder than the 30Rem but all you need is to punch primers, seat new ones, seat the bullet, size the neck and crimp....

Re: Gamemaster 141 30

If you're new to reloading and have absolutely NO loading equipment already, here's what I'd do. 30-30 cartridges are cheap (about $10.00) and they're loaded to top velocities these days, faster than ever. Buy several boxes of them and also a few boxes of 30 Rem cartridges or brass. Buy a bullet pul...

You asked for advice about refinishing the stock:

You'll notice that not many Model 31s are available for sale. They were not manufactured for very long and are therefore relatively more scarce. In fact I don't recall ever seeing a Model 31 TC for sale, so it's reasonable to assume that they are somewhat rare, certainly more rare than the Field Gra...

Model 721

Another one for the log: .270 Win, Serial# 4197X, October 1949 (correct?) The other barrel markings are unlike those shown on the diagrams on this site. The left side looks something like this: III EUU III (three vertical hashes of ascending length on either side of the date stamping). The right sid...

721 Accuracy

I have read several articles that claim Model 721s are very accurate. The implication is that they are perhaps more accurate than the average Model 700. I am thinking of purchasing one and would like to get other opinions from those of you who have owned and shot them.
Thanks
