Re: .58 Berdan RRB

I use a Rapine Mould # .585510 which is a hollow base mini that they described as the "New Style". Unfortunately, Rapine has been out of business for a number of years. Buffalo Arms Co lists, under "Black Powder and Shotgun Moulds" a "New Style" 575213 @ 510gr that is s...

Re: 28 ga rolling block shotgun??

You don't show much of the gun but what you do show looks like a Swedish Husqvarna Model 33.

Re: Help for Rolling Block identification

Santiago, Greetings from Arizona, USA. Your carbine is what is know as the No. 1 carbine. It was made sometime after August 1870. This is because the extractor is what is known as the side slot extractor rather than a rotary extractor. It also has a flat portion of the breech block where it rolls un...

Re: Another ID thread for a rolling block

You have what George Layman calls the "Type 1--Transition Model". This action was used to convert muzzle loading rifles to cartridge rifles. If you look at the face of your breech block you will see "wings" on either side of the main block. This is because many of the early muzzl...

You have what is referred to as a "Flobert" rifle. These were, generally, inexpensive rifles and generally made in Belgium.

Re: Rolling Block N0 2 info needed

Remington made the No 2 in .38-40WCF. There are a couple of other obscure calibers in center fire that could possibly have been chambered in the No 2. The .38 Long centerfire and the .38 Ballard, Extra Long. The only way to tell for sure is to make a chamber cast. The .38-40 WCF has a base diameter ...

Re: Rolling Block N0 2 info needed

It will NOT be .38 Special. No doubt it has been fired. Take a look at the front or face of the breech block. You will see where the firing pin hole is in the block. You will also see the impression of the back end of the case from firing. If the firing pin hole is at the BOTTOM of the mark from the...

Re: Rolling Block N0 2 info needed

It is a No.2. The caliber should be stamped on the bottom of the barrel in front of the forearm. Barrels were usually 24" to 26" long but, I suppose anything is possible.

Re: Spanish rolling block - What do I have?

You have a Spanish contract rifle made by Remington. If the breech block has a concave portion where it rolls under the barrel and the last patent date is 1866, it is the 1st contract. If it has a flat breech block in the same location and the last patent date in 1866, it is the 2nd contract. If it ...

Re: My grandfathers "buffalo gun"

You have a No.1 Rolling Block. Other than that, I can't tell. It has the saddle ring of a carbine but also has sling swivels. While that in itself is not too out of the ordinary, the rear sling swivel is placed really close to the trigger guard. The barrel wears a "rifle" rear sight. You d...

Re: New Member: Rolling block No.1 - Case separation

I'm possibly in over my head here but the problem MAY lie in the relationship between the back end of the barrel and the face of the breech block. Could it be that whoever worked the reline did not square up the two mating surfaces? The Egyptian rifle may have been fairly worn out and possibly the b...

Re: Reloading .43 Remington Spanish

Head space problems are easy to correct with rimmed, bottle necked cartridges. The signs I observe is the primer backing out partially on firing. True Value Hardware stores have marvelous selections of "O" rings. Find one that is skinny enough to fit in front of the rim (coming in from the...

If you are interested in Military Rolling Blocks, get a copy of George Layman's book: "The All New Collector's Guide to Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World". He also covers foreign contracts.
