Re: 1879 Argentine factory overrun???

Don McDowell told me you were the one that bought that rifle...I was awful curious about its originality and was going to contact you but looks like all has been answered to a point. Like you said the bore diameters varied all over the place. I have a buddy that has a 43 Spanish carbine that for all...

You might want to ask here:

or here:

Seems like this topic came up a while back....just can't remember where.

Rare birds but they are your rifles....sorry just the preservationist in me.

I'd call Dave Higginbotham at Lone Star and seek his advice.

Re: #5 Sporter

yellowhouse Yes, the information came from "Remington Rolling Block Rifles, Carbines, & Shotguns" Sporting & Target Rifles by Roy Marcot & Jay Lewis. Thanks again!!! Very much!!! Well, it looks like the bore on this rifle of my friends is too far gone from neglect and he's a s...

Re: #5 Sporter

The #5 Sporter was made from 1898 - 1904 with a production of only 198. I believe all the serial numbers started with 5-xxx. ChuckD Am curious whether your info came from Marcot's book or not. Reason I ask is that Scheirs book on Rolling Blocks says a fair number were made and that production cease...

Re: #5 Sporter

Turned out to be the real deal & in 30-40! No finish left but it's tight according to guy that owns it and shoots very well even with a dark bore. Wish I had a pic from him to post.

Does Marcots book mention about how many #5 sporters were made? Anyone?

#5 Sporter

Anyone got a pic of a #5 Sporter they can post. Buddy found one in 30-40 that has an ebony foreend tip....factory originals appear to have schnabnels. I just thought #1 Sporters were rare!

Re: Deluxe, early #1 sporter!

Find out any more? When I said it looked like the lower tang is longer than the upper, well I'm not sure anymore. Think I was seeing a shadow. At the Tulsa, OK gunshow I saw a fellow carrying what looked to me like a brand new Shiloh albeit with darker wood. He had cotton gloves on which oughta gave...

Re: Deluxe, early #1 sporter!

I haven't seen enough engraving to make a guess but it sure looks nice. There might be some info stamped underneath the barrel or under forearm that might help. What caliber is it?

Re: Deluxe, early #1 sporter!

Whats the serial number range?. Most early ones were round tops, not with rebated receivers. And this one has patents clearly on the tang. Looks like the lower tang is longer so that fits. What are the barrel markings? Looks like the tag says 24K. Bit steep unless it belonged to Buffalo Bill. More d...

Re: Rolling Block restoration

You're gonna have to start over Vall! By using comparitive measurments I deduced that the gap between the forearm and action is in excess of .001 microns. Shame on you! :)

Hopes she shoots well and I bet it does.! If I ever luck on to an action we're gonna see a 50-70 though.
