Re: Hello from Wisconsin

Be VERY cautious. This is a antique, black powder, percussion revolver and it is not designed to withstand the preassures created by modern loads and ammunition. The structural integrity of the metal may have been compromised somewhere along the line and that may not be readily apparent to the naked...

Re: Hello from Wisconsin

Good Afternoon, this is George McAllister. David is right on the money. We do a lot of refinishing work and the color you're seeing is a dead give away, it's a refinished gun. The color will vary from gun to gun, maker to maker. These colors are often referred to as being "Dr. Pepper". Yor...

Re: Garage sale '58 Remington

Probably the most detailed info on the subject of Remington conversions is the book "Remington Large Bore Conversion Revolvers" by Rodger Phillips. I'm pretty sure this book can be ordered through this web site. On page 47 of Phillip's book he refers to information that indicates the 6 cha...

Re: Garage sale '58 Remington

Will Indeed, many of the aftermarket or blacksmith conversions were very well done, some rivaling the factory conversions. I believe Remington had concerns about the wall thickness between cylinders and opted for 5 cylinders to insure adiquate strength. There are basically three variations or genera...

Re: Garage sale '58 Remington

Will
I don't have my serial number dates handy, but I think it's probably 1865. All of the "factory" conversions had 5 shot cylinders, so your's is probably a aftermarket or blacksmith conversion.

Re: .44 1858 New model SN 44011 fully engraved

Hello You are fortunate to own such a nice Remington. I am fairly certain it is not factory engraved. Markings on your gun indicate that it was originally a military revolver. I know of no military Remingtons that were factory engraved. There are no records available at this time to tell us who did ...

Re: Confederate Beals Navy

Added value would depend, to a very large degree, on how reliable or undeniable the provenance is. There are no records indicating that any Remington revolver models were purchased or issued by the Confederacy. Any Remington that ended up in the hands of a Confederate soldier would have been purchas...

Re: Information on 1875 Remington

Grundy Congratulations on getting your hands on a neat old 75. Nailing dates of manfacture for 75 model Remingtons is just about impossible. At this time there are no records available to tie serial numbers to dates of manfacture. To complicate matters, 75's were made in batches and every time a new...

Re: P.A. Marking on transitional army revolver

Good Morning, this is George McAllister I believe your revolver is a early transition model. The barrel is from a 1861 Old Model, the rest of the gun looks like it's a 1858 New Model. The markings are government inspector marks that were stamped as the gun was being manufactured. I couldn't tell of ...

Ron
I'll check my info, but I think the closest I'll be able to get is the month and year. I don't think there are any records available to show a specific date. I'll check tomorrow and will post reply.

Re: DOB for Conversions

Cal Don't think you can find a friendlier or more knowledgeable bunch of gun folks anywhere. Check out the list of back issues of "The Journal", the RSA quarterely publication. The list is found here on the web site. You'll find a magazine filed with detailed articles and pictures of Remin...
