Please Help Dating a Remington New Army .44

Post by RoyA »

Greetings everyone!
My first post in this fine forum.
I just picked up a Civil War era Remington New Army with holster and I was hoping someone might know the date of manufacture.
The serial number is 84370.
Thank you VERY much!!

According to information published in Don Ware's book on Remington large frame revolvers, your revolver, if it bears the cartouche of a Government final inspector, would have been delivered during July of 1864, as part of the contract of November 21, 1863. If you could post a photo of the revolver and holster, I'm sure our readers would like to see it.

Wow, thanks very much for the quick response Mike!
I couldn't see the remnants of a cartouche but the grips are worn...I'll examine them closely under a USB magnifier.
I'll also take pics early next week and post them here.
Thanks again for your help Mike.

Roy,

If the cartouche is not present, and the fit of the grips are accurate and tight, the best we can do is assume that this revolver was not part of a government shipment, for whatever reason. That being said, the manufacture date should still fall close to the date listed for Government purchased revolvers in that serial number range.

Hi Mike,
I've examined the grips closely; they fit accurately and tight, however there is no indication of a cartouche.
There is however a "P" or "D" on the bottom of the trigger guard.
Interestingly it was found in a military style holster that is contemporary to the revolver; over time the leather has form-fitted itself around the cylinder & loading lever.
