Remington 1858 New Model NJ Purchase

Post by jholt »

I own a Remington 1858 New Model NJ Purchase. Serial number 71214 on barrel, trigger guard tang, and left side frame. Frame also has 'TT' marking. 'N.J' on barrel left side. 'H' marks on cylinder, barrel right side and barrel receiver, 'M' and 'B' on trigger guard. 'J' on barrel forward of loading lever. No cartouche on grip. Will someone be able to give me manufacture and shipment dates? Any chance this saw Civil War action? This site and forum are fantastic. Never thought there were so many of these. Thanks in advance. Jim
PS. Not sure if pictures from iPad are attaching.

According to the late Don Ware in his book "Remington Army and Navy Revolvers", your revolver was manufactured in May of 1864. In a letter dated Aug., 8, 1864 a request for 1000 Army revolvers for the state of New Jersey was sent to Remington. Cost was $12/revolver. According to information found in the National Archives by Don Ware indicates that none of the Remington revolvers purchased by the State of New Jersey during the war were issued. This accounts for many of these NJ revolvers being found in excellent condition. Serial numbers are usually in the 58000-75000 range.
