Remington rolling block in 44-40

Post by blazinsun69 »

I can't remember if I asked for help about this gun here or not... if so I won't expect an answer
I hope I can find some help to date this carbine. It appears from the pix I've seen of similar weapons, to be a copy of, or made under Rem. patents.
There are no ID/patent marks visible... I make several careful serches with magnifier...
The caliber is marked on the breech end of the barrel... .44 40 WCF
It is 35-1/2" long... modern front and flip-up rear sights were added at some time, and has been varnished and cold blued.
Has anyone here seen anything... or know of a way to find out any info about it?
I sand-bagged it and fired two reloads thru it, then shot 5 more off hand at 100 ft. or so.... I was all over the 6" target... but then I'm not a great shot.
thanks for any info at all
Larry

Looks like it started life as a Model 1902 smokeless powder rifle and was subsequently altered to .44-40. Probably was originally 7mm Mauser as that was the most common caliber in the M1902.
