From what I am understanding the number on the action is the serial number and the number that would have been on the original barrel would have the date code number. Can anyone help me fund out what it originally was and when it was made?
I think I can give you an approximation. I have a 700 which was made in July of 1968 and the serial number is 3584XX. So, yours was probably built shortly after that. I also have two 700s which were built in 1971 and 1973 and their serial numbers are 64588XX and 65178XX respectively. So, I believe, sometime around 1969, along with some stock style changes, they also added an extra serial number digit starting with "6". In other words, they went from six to seven digits in the serial number. In the mid-1970s they started adding letters preceding the numbers, starting with "A". About every five years they incremented the letter.

Hope that helps a bit.

Greetings guys/gals! New here at this site, but a long-time member of a number of other sites/blogs under the same user name. I have a question in regards to the 700 series that I'm sure one of you knows right off the top of your head. I know the 700 was introduced in 1962 (at least that is what all the info. I can dig up says!) but what was the month the first PRODUCTION 700 came off the assembly bench? Also, did Remington start their production 700's s/n series with "1", or some other number? If they didn't start with "1", does anyone know what the s/n of the first production 700 was?.....Other than that, I think I'm good. LOL Thanks in advance !

I would imagine that if Remington doesn't know, we don't know for sure, either.
But, I would guess the starting serial number was pretty close to "1" or some variation. I think I recall some fairly low numbers being mentioned in posts on the forum.
The lowest numbered one I have is 1798XX from November of 1965.
I'm sure the executives got some of the lowest numbered rifles when they first became available.
The 700 is essentially an upgraded version of the 721 and 722 models from the 1950s.

Hi I have a Remington model 700 270 win with barrel code C H and serial prefix of B. So since the serial B should mean it's early 80's it can't be an '87? Does that make it a '61 or a '39? It looks pretty much flawless but it was an older guy's father's from my work.

The prefixes are just roughly 5 years. The "B" went from 1980 to late 1987.

i have a 700 30/06 serial # 310142 under the impression that it was manf. around 1974 but what I have read on this site that must be false . Must be middle to late 60`s. Any thoughts Ed
The stock is checkered and it has a cheek piece.I believe it is all original , gun was handed down .

Looks to be late 1967. It should say RP or XP on the left hand side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver.

Look at the barrel date code and you'll know for sure.
