I think I can give you an approximation. I have a 700 which was made in July of 1968 and the serial number is 3584XX. So, yours was probably built shortly after that. I also have two 700s which were built in 1971 and 1973 and their serial numbers are 64588XX and 65178XX respectively. So, I believe, sometime around 1969, along with some stock style changes, they also added an extra serial number digit starting with "6". In other words, they went from six to seven digits in the serial number. In the mid-1970s they started adding letters preceding the numbers, starting with "A". About every five years they incremented the letter.phill621 wrote:I just got a custom rem 700 made for me. It has a custom barrel on it so there are no markings on it. An older rem 700 action was used an only has a six digit serial number. (362810). From what I am understanding the number on the action is the serial number and the number that would have been on the original barrel would have the date code number. Can anyone help me fund out what it originally was and when it was made?
Hope that helps a bit.
