Good deal on a Model 141 ???

Post by inspector269 »

I purchased a Remington Model 141 .35 cal. rifle at an auction last night. After a little research, I believe it was manufactured in October 1935, and the serial number is 7081. It is in what I would consider good/very good condition, and I paid $290 for it. Would this be considered a valuable rifle, or would it be a crime to drill it for a scope? Any and all information would be appreciated.

I'm afraid you are off on the manufacture date. 7081's receiver was made in the February-March period of 1936, so the rifle could not have been built in October,1935.

Ok, well then allow me to show my ignorance of these guns. On this website, I located barrel markings which show it to be from Oct.'35. where would the serial number be?

The serial will be on the left side of the receiver. On the left side of the barrel, in front of the receiver, you should find two letters,a bit below and right of the "35 Rem". I suspect your rifle was made in 1936 or later. For 1936, the second letter is "E", while an "F" would be 1937. I hope this helps...tom

I'll let you guys fight out the details, but the barrel code indicates the month/year of assembly. Rem records of when serial #s were made are often not accurate.

ok well this gun has W R R what appears to be a three then D F 6. The "3" may actually be more like an ampersand symbol (&). Not sure but the serial number is 7081, and I apologize if this appears as arguing....I am loving the information. Thanks

WRR would be August 1946. Looks like it was rebarreled at a later date.

It's value is purely in the eyes of the beholder.
Go ahead and drill it for scope mounts.

I would take it to a gunsmith and have them take it apart and clean it and check the headspace. Headspace changes as throat erosion occurs. There is no way for sure to tell what kind of ammo has been shot in it in over 75 years of service.

269, I have a few questions concerning your 141.
1. Which marking on your gun indicated to you a manf. date of Oct 1935?
2. Are there two date codes on the gun-- WRR3 and DF6, the 6 may be special character?
3. Does it have a 24 inch barrel, measure to the hole in the shellhead?

WE are trying to help you and also learn at the same time.
