Gamemaster 141 30

Post by DaveC69 »

Finally shot the Remington 141 30. This Rifle belonged to my grandfather, who passed away in 1965, my father then owned it and tells me he hunted with it in the late 60's (the last time it was fired) Dad gave it to me @ 9 years ago, and I finallly had opportunity to try it out with my son this past Sunday. see http://youtu.be/nrhDY4RNaKw :D
My Father told me the ammo was "hard to come by"
.....I thought I found a source online ( the main reason we fired the 20 remaining rounds Dad gave me with the rifle.) but now I'm not so sure.
So I have a few questions for the experts;
Where can I find ammo?
When was my rifle manufactured (see pictures for serial number "4335" and date code "CE"and what looks like a "6") I've been searching around this excellent site and forum for the last few hours but am not certain where this rifle falls.....1936-1937?
Had a very enjoyable afternoon firing it with my son and look forward to being able to continue if a reliable source of ammo can be found.
Thanks for any and all info provided.
Dave

You do reload.......don't you?
If you're going to shoot that gun much more, you're going to need to get set up to reload, if you're not already. Midway used to have the brass but according to their site, it's been discontinued by the manufacturer (Remington). You might be able to look around and find some leftovers at some of the places that sell brass.

Otherwise, you're stuck with buying loaded stuff which is also pretty scarce.
This place appears to have "some" in stock.

Otherwise, put it away and buy something that you CAN shoot (cheaper).

Here's the link to the barrel date codes.

http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/que ... arrelcodes

The date code of "C E" would translate to April of 1936.

Thanks Den,
unfortunately I don't know the first thing about reloading....I did however save all the brass, and have another box of spent brass that my father had the foresight to hang-on to.
thanks for the links too....I plan to buy a few of those boxes from ows, but will still need to reload sooner than later.
Is there anyone or place around that is in the business of reloads?
regards,
Dave

There was a time when any/all of us knew nothing about reloading. So, you're not alone.
Here's a few more links for your reading and research. The thing about having someone else do the reloading is that you can't be sure just how they put them together. According to one of the forum members, "nambujim" (who is the resident expert on the Model 14s and 141s), these guns can be finicky on how they're loaded. Please take some time to read some of his postings about those guns.

As far as reloading, the .30 Remington is basically loaded the same as a Winchester .30-30. You would want to use either 150 or 170 grain round-nose bullets (probably Remington brand). According to "nambujim", the overall length of the cartridges and the type of bullet used for those guns is critical. Otherwise you can end up with cartridges hung up in the action.
Also, Remington recently came out with a round called the "30 Remington AR".......make sure you DON'T buy any dies for THAT round.

The guys are correct, your gun dates to April 1936.

Buffalo Arms has a nice website and they sell loaded .30 Remington Ammunition made from new Remington brass, it isn't cheap but it IS dependable.

If you aren't going to do a lot of shooting with the gun, this is probably the way to go. Maybe you know someone that reloads .30-30 Winchester, the .30 Remington is the identical cartridge BUT is a rimless version but you can use .30-30 dies/loads for it but will need the proper shell holder for the .30 Remington. OH!! Just to make sure you understand, you CAN'T use .30-30 ammunition in your rifle.

I just read all that back to myself and now I'm even confused.....LOL.....but
Buffalo Arms in Idaho (and on the web) have brass & loaded ammunition.

Good luck, great old rifle........keep it in the family!

reeds ammo has factory loaded 30 rem from remington brass. just google them. it will run somewhere around $30/box of 20. i can vouch for it. it functions and cycles in all my 30's. it is loaded to about the same ballistics as factory 30/30 ammo so its good for hunting too. you have to be careful with the OAL of some reloaded 30 rem. if it isn't just right it won't feed right. i have several 30's and always keep my eye out for ammo. i find it pretty regularly at gunshows and online auctions. if you get really stuck for some, send me a PM and i can hook you up. i have enough ammo and brass to last me and my kids and their kids a while. remington quit making it in 97 but there is still a lot of the later stuff out there. i found 7 boxes of later ammo for $70 last spring at a gunshow in PA. i bought a box of misc ammo a month or so ago online and there were 80 some factory 30 rounds in it from the 50's in their original boxes so it can be found.

from the looks of your gun it looks like someone customized it. that checking and pistol grip cap is not original. how long is the barrel? lots of good info on this site about those old classics. there are guys on this site that can answer just about any question you have about it.

If you're new to reloading and have absolutely NO loading equipment already, here's what I'd do. 30-30 cartridges are cheap (about $10.00) and they're loaded to top velocities these days, faster than ever. Buy several boxes of them and also a few boxes of 30 Rem cartridges or brass. Buy a bullet puller (about $10.00) and unload the 30-30 catridges and reload the 30 Rem brass with their powder and bullets. You'll need primers and a Lee Loader in 30-30 Win. It should work fine for 30 Rem and this would be the cheapest way to get started and get some cheaper shells.

Dave-I placed this reply in the wrong thread initially and got a complaint about my method there but this post was meant for you. This will work and I will give some specifics about how to do it. You may not know what a Lee Loader is but its a $30 kit that's essentially a handheld loading die and a few other components. You use a plastic/rubber mallet (believe it or not) rather than a press to operate it. You punch out spent primers with a punch and base bushing (very easy) and seat new primers with a combination primer and bullet seater provided in the kit. The key is though that you don't want to resize the case completely. 30WCF and 30Rem case dimemsions are nearly identical but not quite, however a 30WCF Lee Loader will work. The important dimensions are correct for 30 Rem if you follow these instructions. Resizing the case involves driving the unprimed empty case into the die with a mallet. Don't do that - just seat a new primer, sit the cartridge in the base bushing, place the die over the cartridge, dump the powder from a 30-30 round into the top of the die, place the bullet in afterward and seat the bullet with bullet seating tool provided (and a mallet). You first want to adjust your die by placing a loaded factory round in the base bushing, placing the die over it and the bullet seater into the top of the die and adjusting the height of the die by screwing/turning it until the bullet seater cup rests on the tip of the bullet and the shoulders of the bullet seater rest on the top of the die. Contact me if you want more info. 30-30 cartridges will provide you with packaged cheap premeasured loads if you can get ahold of a few 30 Rem cases. You won't need to buy hundreds of bullets, pounds of powder and hundreds more dollars worth of equipment just to shoot a little.
