Looking for a buttplate and what year it was made.

Post by WyoHntnDude »

Hi, I think I have a model 14 but there isn't a model number stamped anywhere. Srl # C 32300 and is a 32 caliber. The butt measure 4"x1 1/4" with 2 15/16" center screw hole to hole. How do you post a photo?? Thanks

Rifles in that serial range were generally made in 1914. Marking the model, first on the barrel, and later on the receiver did not start until around 1919. The earlier 14s had a steel shotgun style buttplate or a hard rubber one, both shaped the same. Your rifle probably had the hard rubber version, which was easy to break or chip. Vintagegungrips.com sells a reproduction. I think it is the "R12a" that you would need for $21.............tom h

Thanks Tom H!

How much value does an old firearm loose if it gets reblued? New stocks?

There's no good answer. If it was in rough shape (shooter only) reblueing and/or restocking doesn't hurt much, but you'll never get the costs of the changes back.
