Remington Model 25 questions

Post by sicigpat »

Hello gents,
I'm a first time poster and am trying to assist a co-worker who recently inherited a few rifles ,one of them being a model 25 pump in 32wcf caliber.the serial # is 31692.it has the tang sight mount on the back of the pistol grip but the peep is missing. the wood has some dents and dings.I would rate the bluing at about 85% with some light patina. The bore appears dark but I havent tried to clean it yet. can anyone advise as to to manufacture date and maybe a brief history about this particular model.thanks.Patrick

With that serial that high it should be well into 1930. they are all date code stamped on the barrel, please check the Manufactured Date link on the home page to look it up.

Interesting.......
I have a model 25 in .25-20 with a serial number of 312XX with a barrel date code of "O E" which would be July of 1936.
The Remington website says they were discontinued in 1935.

Check your barrel date code.

I maintain a database on model 25s with over 600 listed so far. Some of what it shows are build codes from 1922 to 1927. About 200 were assembled thru November of 1922 and mass production started in December of that year with over 1000 built that month. In around 1935 discussion was held on whether to offer in in a 22 caliber, probably a 218 Bee or something similar. The decision was made at that meeting to discontinue them and use up the parts on hand. This was done in 1936 primarily. I currently list serials ranging from as low as 256xx to 328xx built in 1936, with most numbers in the 28-328xx range. 57 were made in 1937, according to old records. Interestingly, some of the last ones have a curved lower tang and are fitted with 121 stocks. I have found 2 carbines with saddle rings so far, something that was never offered according to factory literature from those years, leading to the conclusion that they were special order...............tom

Tom,
First post here. I have a 25A to add to your database. Can't see where to PM you. might be because of first post status.

I have a Remington Model 25 that has a silver instead of blued action bar. Did any of the grades come this way from the factory? I see Tom H. has a database of over 600 and wondered if perhaps he has ever run across this. If anybody knows, please let me know.

To my knowledge, all of the model 25s had blued action bars. My guess would be that some previous owner modified it. I now have information on over 700 of them, and from pre-production pieces to upper grades, action bars were all blued............tom hemphill@gvtel.com

I have a Model 25 in .32-20, serial 6228, and barrel date code EP (October 1923.) Nothing special, just a well cared for survivor with a good bore that shoots nicely well. No tang sights, but it has the bumps and bruises you'd expect on a 93 year old rifle that has spent time afield.
