Model 760 date code too early

Post by iskra1 »

A recent Thread on the Model 760 referred to information that the model was produced in .308 from 1957 onward to 1980. If so, my 760 in 308 is a 'tilt'!

Mine is a very nice specimen seemingly all original in every detail. Yet the date code on the left side of the barrel is "RC" and followed nearby "oo" (more like letters than numerals). This data is stamped quite clearly. It's my understanding this code would relate to November 1956 production. Could that be correct and IF SO... what implications if any?
Just further ancillary information. On the barrel right side is a rectangle within which appear as a forward facing capital "L" followed by the same backwards, almost as a stylized 'cattle brand' and a couple of other obtuse markings. These markings are not as clearly defined (in the insurance photo file from which I'm viewing all this info.)
I realize that serial numbers are not particularly relevant on Remington rifles of almost the last century, but included here anyway for my specimen as: 2928xx

Thanks for any insights!

"R C" would be be November of 1956. The rifles were built prior to their distribution in 1957......which is the way I interpret the information I posted from the Remington site.
I don't see a problem with the date code on your rifle. Seems quite reasonable to me......they have to build them before they can sell them.

I now am in possession of a 760 in 222Rem that was built and is date stamped May, 1957! Everywhere says they started in that caliber in 1958. The production dates are only guidelines to the cataloged items. Serial numbers are not pinpoint accurate, but for the most part get you very close. Yours seems about right as mine is in the low 307000s. Both our examples can be considered early, but only in general.
My 700 in 7mm-06 is date stamped Dec 1978 for the new caliber designation for the year 1979. Most other specimens were produced in November '78.

Brad...from "that other thread" ! LOL

Thanks very much for the information. It sounds like Remington played a little fast and loose with getting their new models to market. I suppose I can understand a month or two around the holidays for my .308, but the .222 situation... as the old refrain from September Song goes: "But it's a long, long way from May to December..."! That's really some kind of marketing from another era!
Thanks Again & Best!

I just got a Jun '53 ADL. has all the features, and the newsletter info says Jun '53 was first month/year of the ADL. Mine is checkered, has the higher comb, and is D&T for scope, plus sling mounts
