Rem742
Rem742
Last Friday I bought a Remington 742 Woodsmaster .30-06. The serial number on the frame is 301081 and the left side barrel letters are U W P. From what I can tell, the serial number blocks on Remington's website indicate it was made somewhere between 1951 and 1967. I tried to determine an exact month and year based on the barrel codes on this site but apparently I'm not smart enough to figure it out. Could someone please help ?
Re: Rem742
Comes out to Aug. 1967. The "U" is likely a final inspection mark as it doesn't line up with the month. It "may" be part of a symbol as well. Sometimes the stamping, done by hand at that point, wasn't always completely identifiable.
Re: Rem742
Thanks, I appreciate it !!
So, if I understand, you find the month. Then whatever column that is in, you follow that down until you find the second stamp. Correct ?
Does this work for shotguns as well ?

Re: Rem742
Only reliable for fixed barreled shotguns as the different models that have interchangeable barrels may not have the barrel that came with the gun unless you know for sure.
1st letter is the month. Uses the word BLACKPOWERX for the 12 months. Then the next letter or group of letters is the year. So the P stands for 1967 on your rifle. N is '66, R is 68 and so on.
