Finish on a Model 30 stock

Post by Tbury »

I just picked up a Model 30 Express in .30 Rem on Gun Broker. I rate the blue about 85%, good condition for its age and no marks or scratches just honest wear. The stock is in very good to excellent shape with a few minor dents and very little wear on the checkering. My question is what should the finish on this gun be? I was expecting varnish with dulling and some chips on the edges. The finish on this gun is matte with grain showing (oil?); but not obvious signs of refinishing.

Nice rifle.

Here's some close up pictures of one that also looks like it has the original finish. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =158829616

Thanks Rickster, that finish matches mine. I questioned it because other Remingtons I have from the teens have what appears to be a varnish finish that is glossy rather than matte.
