Converting a Model 58 to a 870

Post by twaddie »

I have seen a few of these Model 58 conversions for sale lately.
Is this a feasible conversion with stock parts?
Something the kitchen table gunsmith can do?

I think you are misunderstanding something. I have never heard of anyone converting a Model 58 to an 870. I have heard of people converting an 870 barrel to fit a Model 58. Why would anyone convert a limited availability gun, which some people love the handling of, to THE most popular and prolific model ever made, or convert a semi auto to a pump?

No I am sure this ad reads as a 58 converted to a 870.
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =346097991.

I have a pristine 58 12 ga that I cannot seem to sell.
When I bought it I did not know it was unfired. So I ran a couple of boxes thru it and hated it.
I like my 870 a lot better. So it has sat in my safe for 15 years and I need to do something with it.
A gloryfied 870 would be unique item.

That is indeed what the ad says. I don't think that guy knows what he has either. If he is correct, it makes no sense. If you don't like your 58 you can sell it for more than you can buy an 870 with accessories.
The 58 uses a different trigger group, and it has been a long time, but I think the receivers are machined quite differently inside as well.

The seller does indeed convert 58 receivers by using mostly 870 parts. He is a good guy. I have bought lots of Remington parts from him over the years. I'm sure he would give you the details if you asked him. If I had a bare 58 receiver, I would do it myself. Tom

Since I started this, Remington 58's are just not in demand here on the "Left Coast". Everyone wants a tactical 870 and they get a premium price for 870's.
I had contacted the person advertising the conversion and got a bland responce, thus my asking the question here.
So in the end I gave the 58 to my son, and I hope he appreciates the piece of history he has.

Its not something on my top ten list. But if I had a crapped out 870 and a clean 58 receiver. I would Frankenstein it! Tom

I would sell the 58 to one of the Skeet guys who love them and buy two 870s. I have never heard of converting a semi to a pump before. Learn something new every day.
