Cutts Compensator Removal?

Post by AZsnipe »

I recently acquired a Remington Model 11 with a 26" bbl and a factory fitted Cutts Compensator. When I removed the Cutts body, the collar (part attached to the barrel) shows three small holes drilled into it, without any set screws, just blind holes. They look like they were meant to be for a spanner wrench of some kind.
I want to shorten the barrel to 18" and re-attach the comp, but I'm not sure how to remove the collar without damaging it.
My information tells me that they were attached in several ways. Some were soft soldered, some were threaded, some were silver soldered.
Any ideas on how to proceed? I want to keep the Cutts collar in good shape so I can use it on the shortened barrel.

Thank you.

Found out the hard way. The collar was pressed onto the barrel, then silver soldered. In addition, there was a brass sleeve inserted between the barrel and the collar before it was pressed on. Needed acetylene to break the silver solder bond. MAP gas wouldn't touch it.
