Sportsman Model 48 Grade

Post by CMColl »

I am planning on buying a Remington Sportsman Model 48 in 12 gauge and am really unfamiliar with this model. I am wondering how to determine the Model of the gun. The receiver is marked Sportsman Model 48 only. I understand there is a Model 48A, 48B,48D and possible a Model 48F. The gun comes with 2 barrels with vent ribs, 1 with skeet and 1 with full choke. I don't think a Model A came with vent rib barrel. The owner thinks the barrels came with the gun when it was purchased. Any information is appreciated.

From the beginning the "SPORTSMAN-'48A" "Standard" Grade could be had with a plain barrels, a matted top surface barrel or a vent rib barrel. From the 1949 Remington Arms Co., Inc. catalogue --

Yes, then vented ribbed barrels were extra cost options, available on any grade.
