Safe loads for a Remington 1889 with steel barrels?

Post by Gary Bell »

I have a Remington 1889 Grade 1, built in 1904. I've owned it for over 30 years and I've used it a lot for duck and pheasant using 2-3/4" modern standard loads. According to the water-table (92/30) it's a full/modified. The breech is tight. Is the steel of these barrels able to handle slugs, buckshot, and/or 2-3/4" magnum loads or would that be pushing the envelope for this old friend?

If I were you I would not shot anything but modern light loads. No magnums or slugs. Jay Huber RSA
