He has a 722(A) (stock is as plain as you can get) which has definitely been rebarreled but it is in 22-250. From what I have gathered this was never a production caliber. Remington was able to give me the manufacturing year of 1956 but no month. Serial number is 3762xx.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
If you go to page 1 of this thread, you'll see the serial numbers of rifles that people have, listed by the date that corresponds to the barrel date codes (from the following link).

http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/que ... arrelcodes

Based on the part of the serial number you provided, it would probably fall in or around the following two numbers.

3762xx 722 244 X B 12/55
3768xx 722BDL 222 L C 2/56

Without the original barrel, you don't know what the original caliber is......however, it was obviously a short-action caliber with an '06 case head (that would fit the .22-250). So, I would guess it might have been a .244 Remington, .257 Roberts, .300 Savage or .308 Win. If I had to narrow it down further, I would guess it might have been the .244 Rem or .300 Sav. Due to some less-than-complimentary articles by some of the gun writers of the day, the .244 caliber fell out of favor and the 300 Sav. was losing popularity by the 1960s due to the popularity of the .308 Win. and many .300 Savage barrels were rechambered to .308 Win. So, my deductive "guess" would be that it was originally a .244 Rem.
The .22-250 cartridge was "legitimized" by Remington in 1965.

If your rifle has a genuine Remington barrel (with all the proper identification stamped in it), you should be able to see when that barrel was made from the barrel date code. If it was removed from a Remington rifle, then you'll know that the rifle was re-barreled after 1965. If it is a non-Remington barrel, it could have been done almost anytime after 1956 (since the .22-250 cartridge originated in 1937)

I've been reading the posts about the 308 issue. All say 1956. My 722 308 has CB for a date stamp.
April 1955. It's been in my family since it was purchased new,but relative is deceased so I can't find out when it was bought.
And it is in beautiful condition having been hardly used. ie; no floor plate blueing degradation or browning of the blue. Uncut barrel with the bulged rear sight boss.
So,,,,made in 1955 as it states? Would like to know for contemplating selling.

If you look at the list on page 1, there are several .308s listed between 1953 and 1955. So, based on the other information you mentioned, I think you could assume that the date code is correct on yours.

Go to my post at the top of this page and click on the first link in it. It is the link to the barrel date codes......which is also identified on the home page of the Remington Society website.

Sry i should have looked up the page more so mine was made in 11/49. When I looked at the diagram it shows the first set of letters mine has this it dates to 1950. Does this mean this gun was repaired.

I'm not exactly sure what you're looking at or comparing, but it's not all that uncommon for the serial numbers on the actions to be older than the barrel codes.....sometimes by "years". The action could have been sitting in inventory for some time before the barrel was added.
However, it's also not uncommon to find that the rifles have been sent back for some sort of servicing or repair and those codes should also be stamped into the barrel. I think I've read that a "3" indicates a return for servicing/repair.

Finally found a 300 H&H that hadn't been butchered or re-chambered. Here's the details for it as well as for the .222 I picked up this past spring.

my 721 .270 was dated at march of 1949. i got it for $150.00. it would not shoot good. however after removing the sling swivel stud from touching the barrel in the barrel channel the .270 is a consistant 1" group with factory corelocks..good old rifle..
