721 300H&H stock search

Post by Joel »

I just bought a stock that came from a 721 300H&H, but my 721 300HH action does not even come close to fitting in it. However a 300 savage take-off barrel fits right in. Did rem make two-different barrel profiles for the 300H&H?

If anyone knows where to find the proper stock I'd like to know

Thanks

That's a pretty limited amount of information to try to diagnose your problem. Do you suppose you could elaborate a little more? Saying "does not even come close to fitting in it" doesn't tell us much.

What's the barrel date code and what does it translate to a manufacturing date?

Does the barrel have a "hump" with the rear sight (or the dovetail for it)?

Does the stock have the cutout/channel for the barrel hump?

Is the barrel profile larger than the channel in the stock for the barrel?

The 300 H&H is a magnum cartridge and the 300 Savage is not. Many/most magnum caliber rifles have heavier barrel contours than standard calibers.

yy code, 52, my barrel has "hump"

I know Magnum barrels are heavier, that is why I am vexed as to how his 300H&H is same contour as standard 721 barrel (300 savage)

My barrel is much fatter from recoil lug all the way up past the hump.

He sent me pic of his 300H&H in it's new stock as proof of origin of stock he sold me.

Apparently there were some 721s in 300 H&H manufactured on both ends of the 1950s

From your description, it's starting to sound like HIS rifle might have been a re-chambered 30-06.
This was not all that uncommon back then.
About 20-some years ago, I acquired a (1952 vintage) 721 (with hump) which had been a 30-06 and was re-chambered to a .308 Norma Mag. (they opened the bolt face, too).
Then, about 20 years ago I acquired a 1961 vintage 721 in .264 Win. Mag......without hump and somewhat heavier barrel than the other one.

I've only seen one original 300 H&H 721, but that's been some years ago and I wasn't inspecting it all that closely........it was a little pricey at that time, so I placed it back in the rack.

in the pics he sent of his 300H&H, barrel stamps appear to be original, does not look like re-bored from 30-06
