New member, wood question

Post by Gmountain »

Hi all. New member here.

I recently purhased an older 1100, 20 ga, standard weight. The serial number ends in X, with no numerical prefix. The serial number itself is 84, xxx, so I'm assuming it's fairly early on in the production.

Do you guys know if the wood stocks are walnut, and have always been walnut?

I also understand that the 1100 12ga and, I think, 16ga stocks and forends fit this model.

Anyway, I've always wanted an early 1100, because it's an American classic.

Hi GMtn, The 1100 came out in 1963/64. Serial numbers without a prefix were issued 1964-1968, yours would be no doubt 1964. The X suffix indicates "20 ga heavy frame", so the receiver should be same as a 16 or 12 ga and the stocks should interchange. Best way to tell is to try to swap them. I believe all the wooden stocks are walnut unless laminate, and there were synthetic ones. Don't think they made an "express" type like the 870 express with the hardwood stocks (not walnut).
