Sportsman 74 autoloader designed like the 742 or 7400???

Post by RIfle Dawg »

Hello ,
I was wondering does the sportsman 74 30-06 have the same design flaws as the 742 woodmaster or is it more like the 7400? I'm in a position to pick up one at a decent price in good shape. thanks for your help!

The 74 is a lesser 7400 as the wood is stained hardwood and the metal work is not as spit and polished. They were only in 30-06 and have a less expensive site system. Otherwise they perform just as a 7400 would, just without the bells and whistles.

I've had both 20 years ago and kept the 742. Both were in 308 and never had any problems with either. The gas system was updated and of course the bolt revamped. 7400 has a much smoother action because of the new style lugs on the bolt. Both handled any ammo but for the accelerator type. I ran boxes of surplus 7.62 through the 742 without problems but ran out before the 7400 came along. I can't remember if the clips were interchangeable; I think they were though. Kept the 742 as it has sentimental value, sold off 7400 only because I didn't need 2 semis. I probably sold 4 cases of 74s when I worked at a gun store and don't remember any issues.

I have changed a number of bolts in the 742's over the years. The "S" grove in the side of the bolt wears with extensive shooting. When they wear out, if you dry fire them, you can not open the bolt without using a mallet. I like the 742 when it's working. But in my experience you just can't shoot it a lot or it WILL wear out.
