Model 141?

Post by mstev50 »

I've had this old Remington sitting in the closet since my dad passed away 7 years ago. I finally got around to checking it out and was looking for some info. I believe it's a .30 cal Model 141. The s/n looks like C 63629 and the barrel is marked EUU3, which I think would make it from Oct 1949. I also have 2 boxes of 30 Remington 170 grain soft point which I think go with it. Am I correct in thinking this is a 141 and should it be safe to take it to the range with that old ammo?

I got a Model 14 in 30 Remington handed down to me too. Most of my rounds were spotted with green and nasty looking. I tried to shoot some of the better stuff and each case split. Tossed it all out. Some of that old stuff had brass that wasn't up to today's standards and storage makes all the difference too. If the gun has no mechanical problems and the rounds look okay, then if it was mine I'd try shooting a few rounds, but check the cases when they eject. My $0.02.

These cartridges look pretty clean. They've been stored up in a closet for years.

The pics you posted look like a Mod. 14 , but the date code could be in the Mod. 141 era . Is it stamped The Gamemaster on the left side of the receiver ? If not it's a model 14 built in 1927 . 141s had a 24" barrel with a ramp type front sight and are stamped The Gamemaster . 14s had a 22" barrel , and the front sight dovetail was cut into an estucion that is part of the barrel . they have different wood also ! As far as shooting it , as long as the ammo looks good (no corrosion) , I'd shoot it if I wanted to , .30 Rem. ammo and brass is not easy to come by . I think if I had a full box of factory loads , I'd hang onto them for posterity , they do have some collector value also .

Couldn't find Gamemaster stamped anywhere. I've posting another full pic as well as the Model 1903 my dad alos had. That s/n is 3155213 which I think would make it from 1942. Looks like someone replaced the stock with a homemade one. Lots of sanding marks on it. It also looks like it has a coat of varnish or something on the barrel.

Looks like you have a 141 barrel, which may be the repair that was made in 1949 as indicated by the date code and the "3". I believe the barrel is 24 inches and it has the ramp front sight base added on. As indicated by "oneoldsap" the stock could have been replaced at that time as well. The receiver was made and S/N stamped about early 1919, the gun was completed after that time. It may or may not had an original date code, after 1921, but would have lost it when the new barrel was added. Nice looking gun, keep it in the family.
