Can anyone tell me the date of manufacture for a model 12 pump action .22 S, L, LR serial number 1055xx?
Also mine is somewhat rusted but I would swear that there is writing or printing or something?
on the left side of the receiver near the top that looks like (FAST) OR (*AST) and about mid way down it looks like the
number 19** or something any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Model 12 Mysterious Markings
David,
I don't have a book to give you an exact date but my 111xxx was made in 1912. Yours may or may not be made the year earlier. Hope to get the book some day.

Re: Model 12 Mysterious Markings
According to factory records your was made in early 1912. The #s that year started with 104042 and ended with 166538. It was a busy year at Remington making Model 12s...
The other markings you describe are probably not factory stampings.

Re: Model 12 Mysterious Markings
That is an incredible number of lovely little pump guns to put out!
John, are all the model 12's in the same sort of sequence as far as A's, B's etc....

Re: Model 12 Mysterious Markings
I'm not sure if this answers your question, but...
12-A...............Round barrel
12-B...............Octagon barrel-22 Short-Gallery Gun
12-C...............Octagon barrel -
12-CS.............Octagon barrel - 22 Rem Spec caliber
12-D
12-E
12-F...............The D, E, & F grades have increasing degrees of engraving and quality of wood. They were also available in 22 short or 22 Rem Spec.
Early 12s are marked 22 LR. It was later changed to 22 S, L, or LR.
There was also a "NRA" marked rifle, etc, etc.
Too many details to be all inclusive. That's why Roy & I wrote the book

Re: Model 12 Mysterious Markings
I was thinking more in the serial number scheme of things, I am sure they had all the A's and C's coming off the line at the same time.
I imagine they just mas produced the receivers and then put what ever barrel on after that they needed to make so there isn't any real rhyme or series of serial numbers that any one model follows.

Re: Model 12 Mysterious Markings
It seems like they may have made a "run" of a certain variation; in other words, I have noticed that several of my 12-CSs are near the same serial #. Then they seem to be mostly 12-Cs or As for a while. Then it goes back to CSs....
