Rifle Values - NIB 742 & Old Model 700 ?

Post by M'bogo »

I recently added two nice Remingtons to my collection at what I consider a lower than market price. Can someone here point me in the right direction of finding the value of these firearms? They are as listed below.

The first one is a NIB 742 Woodsmaster 22" bbl in 30-06. It has the original box, owner's manual (with the angled cleaning brush - package unopened) and all factory packaging. The ser# is B6927xxx and the codes on the left side of the barrel are L Q 31.

The second one is an older Model 700 chambered in .280Rem it is in 98-99% condition. The previous owner told me it had only been shot a couple of times. I would rate this gun ANIB. It has the metal buttplate and the old flat safety that locks the bolt closed when the safety is on. The ser# is 231xxx and the codes on the left side of the barrel are D W N G.

Any help and advice on these rifles is welcome and much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and help.

I cant help you much on the 742, but on the 700 in the 280 I may. You didnt provide the barrel leingth but I can work around it. If you have a carbine model your 280 will have a little more collector value. Your gun looks like it was made in 1966. Thay only made 173 of them that year in the adl version and 122 in the bdl version. There were only 1868 700ADLs made between 1962 to 1968, and only 1019 700 BDLs. So if yours is a BDL it will bring a little more premium. Your gun will be considered desireable, but not rare. Regardless you have a great gun. I will have to check my records but if yours was made in 1966 you probably have a 22" barrel and not a 20". THE 20" is a little bit more sought after. I paid recently for a 20" ADl 700 in near new condition about $850.00. I would suspect to pay about $950.00 for a BDL carbine, and a $100.00 or more less for other barrel leinghts. I do believe if a person would really search he probably could find them a bit cheaper from people that are not that knowledgable about Remingtons because the 280 caliber doesnt really stick out as a collectable cartridge to the average guy. The 280 rem, is a wonderful caliber without any doubt. Please let me know if I can be anymore help.

Thank you for the quick reply. The .280 is a BDL with a 22" barrel.

Thanks again.

Well I dont know much about 742s. But I tried to do a little bit of research. New in the box guns are always better then the alternative. What I gathered and may not be true it looks like around 550.00 to 650.00. The used 742s seem to drop off on value because it seems like most people bought these guns to use and there seems to be alot of well used ones. I hope Im right and I hope this helps. It sounds like you have a real nice 700, and it sounds like your happy with the deal you got. At least someone getting one.
