Remington "lightweight" Hammerless SxS's?
Remington "lightweight" Hammerless SxS's?
Beautiful all original Remington Model 1894 DE Grade 12 bore - lightweight game gun in untouched condition! Weight: 6lbs 11.5oz
This listing notes the 1894 as a lightweight? I have a 12 bore 1900 KED that weighs about the same as my 16 gauge KED (12 is 6.52 and 16 is 6.34). My other 1894/1900's all go over 8 lbs. The receiver is obviously smaller. The 12 has 28" barrels and handles very nicely.
I have not been able to find any advertising references to this option, any help?

Re: Remington "lightweight" Hammerless SxS's?
Most of my Remington Arms Co. catalogs give 12-gauge weights as 7 to 8 3/4 pounds. Some of the later catalogs give 6 3/4 to 8 3/4 pounds when they began listing 26-inch barrels under certain grades. Then there is this 1908 vintage KE-Grade, 12-gauge, 26-inch, hang tag at 6 1/2 pounds --
The 1908 Remington Arms Co. catalog doesn't offer 26-inch barrels for the K Quality guns --
It appears the boys on the factory floor were building things that the folks in the office weren't getting into the catalogs. By the 1908-09 and 1909 Remington Arms Co. catalogs they listed 26-inch barrels for all qualities of the Remington Hammerless Double except B qualities?!?
I have never seen a catalog listing or magazine ad offering "lightweight" Remington Hammerless Doubles. If you ever find such, please share.

Maybe you're thinking of the 1889. Some were advertised as light weights.

No Paul, the idea of smaller frame "Light Weight" 1894's have been floated in some camps for years.
I do not know if it ever made a "Double Gun Journal" story or not but I expected it to when Mr. Deem started contributing to it.

Some 89s have a recessed water table. Those were called light weight. I have both. Straight across the table, and a step down.
Re: Remington "lightweight" Hammerless SxS's?
I have a 12 gauge Remington 1900 KED 28" (1901) that weights 6.52 lbs
The barrel is marked L K D The receiver is 2.24 wide
Any ideas?

Re: Remington "lightweight" Hammerless SxS's?
In terms of 1900s, I have a 1902 K in almost new condition and a 1910 KED. The difference between the two (other than options) is that the that the 1910 is about 1/8" narrower across the water table (1 3/8 vs.1 1/2+). Bolster width for the 1902 measures about 2.375" and 2 25" for the 1910.
Unfortunately the stock on the 1910 is a replacement so weight, barrel length etc. is meaningless to determine lightweight status.
I don't recall any mention of Model 1900 12 gauge frame differences or lightweight variants in Semmers' book

Re: Remington "lightweight" Hammerless SxS's?
I have two examples of the smaller frame (lightweight) hammerless Remington double barrels. One in a 1894 (A grade) and the other in a 1900. Both 12 gauges are built on a 16 gauge frame. This is how they shaved the weight of the 12 gauge down 6 something pounds. I can post some pictures later if you would like.
The receivers and barrels are smaller and noticeable if you were to place a small frame set of barrels on a regular frame receiver.

Mike,
I would like to see some pictures of your "lightweight" hammerless 12's.
It sounds like I may have the same variation in my Model 1900.
Thank you for the reply, Mike

Here are a couple pics of my 1910 KED "lightweight" (left or up) and 1902 K (right or down). Hopefully the size difference can be seen.

Re: Remington "lightweight" Hammerless SxS's?
Well it looks like several of us collectors have "lightweight" 12 bore hammerless Remingtons!
My next question (with no answer I'm betting) is why there are not many catalog references? The other makers already were building smaller frames and gauges to expand markets I would assume. My 12 gauge light 1900 even feels poised for game shooting!
Thanks for the great pictures Mike & DieNusse1

Re: Remington "lightweight" Hammerless SxS's?
I have one of the lightweight 1894 hammerless shotguns that was my grandfather’s. It is pretty light and has original 26” barrels with ejectors. It is an A grade shotgun. It has an v shaped ejector bed like the 16 ga framed guns.
My 26” barrels are Damascus and marked LAEY. I did buy another 28” long steel barrel that are for the same size frame marked LOXE. It has the Roman numeral II next to the X of both barrels. The steel barrels also are stamped 2-3/4”.
I have not had them fitted to the frame yet. Looking to do that and replace the stock which was pinned at the head long ago.
