Questions About Model 14 Carbine

Post by 44-henry »

Hello,
I recently picked up what I believe to be a Model 14 35 Remington carbine. I have always been a fan of the 35 and have had a few other Remingtons chambered for it, but never a 14. It is in nice condition and should make a good shooter, but the trigger is not working at the moment. It feels like the safety I'd engaged in either position. Before I dig deeper I thought it best to get some information. Also, if anyone knows a good gunsmith in PA that could work on these I would just as soon take it in for the work.

Also, the rear sight is extremely fine and should be great on paper, but I would prefer a peep sight. Which model would be correct for this vintage 14 that would not require any drilling/ tapping or other alteration? Any information you could provide would be appreciated.
Here are a couple photos of the gun.

14 Carbines in that condition are difficult to find, nice rifle!

Lyman R14 tang sight fits in the holes provided by the factory at the back/top of the receiver, so will a Marble R8 but it has a small screw that goes into the stock. Either sight would require replacement of the front sight. The Wheel sight looks spiffy but has an awful sight picture. It was designed by John Pedersen to fit into the extra slot on the barrel, that slot was needed for the milling process. Drilling the receiver for a "receiver sight" would scuttle the value of your nice Model 14R.

Your trigger situation I have seen hundreds of times, dried oil blended with a little muck gathering in an area where there is no escape. It usually requires the trigger/cross bolt safety to be removed, cleaned/polished while flushing & cleaning the guard assembly. The exciting part is putting the trigger assembly back together while launching the trigger spring cap off into space. Its a bit tedious but after you do it 15-20 times not so bad.

PA has a lot of these guns so maybe you can get lucky with a gunsmith but he won't have parts in case that "trigger spring cap" eludes him. Most gunsmiths today have never seen one of these rifles. In parting let me give you a warning, don't try to use Leverevolution ammunition in this rifle. Use RNSP ammunition only!!

Thank you for the info, I appreciate it and will keep a lookout for the proper tang sight.

I picked up a Lee 200 grain flat nose mold for it which hopefully will feed alright. Brass was a challenge to get, but finally got hold of some so I should be set once I can get the trigger issue worked out. With any luck it will be ready for deer season.

Going to say this for the 100th time on the site.

You do NOT use cast bullets in these rifles!

You do NOT use Flat Point bullets in these rifles!

You will get slivers from the cast bullets that will seriously mess with your feed system.

.............and if that isn't enough, these rifles came with "hang tags" stating "Use Round Nose Bullets Only". Flat or pointed bullets interfere with all the sharp edges in the feed system. The older the Model 14, the worse it is.

Do whatever you think best but remember this posting when you realize "you" were the one that screwed up your rifle while trying to clear the jam.

Best of luck!

I had not heard that.
I have shot other Remington 14's in my father's collection with cast loads in the past with no issues, but I will order some 200 grain jacketed round nose and try it loading with those. If I can I generally cast everything these days due to cost.

I also shoot cast as much as I can but what Jim is telling you is true with these particular rifles. You can shoot cast but after a while you will have feeding issues and need to take the feed system apart for some major cleaning. You can do that , I can do it but prefer not to have to as they are not the easiest thing to disassemble and put back together correctly.
