I have an original New Model Navy conversion. Based on my review of Donald Ware's excellent book, I have reached some tenative conclusions about it, but I would appreciate anyone's comments or additions.
Serial number is 27848.
Some pictures are at http://www.dnet.net/sgp/Rem1858.htm
Mr. Ware's book seems to indicate that:
It was manufactured as a percussion revolver in 1863-1864 as one of about 6,000 made for the U.S. Navy during the civil war.
It is one of the 1,020 returned by the Navy to Remington in 1876 for
conversion to .38 caliber center fire.
It has the cylinder type which was altered by the Navy's Bureau of Ordinance
in 1885 to cut down the rear face of the cylinder to eliminate the recesses
for the cartridge rims (Ware pp 312, 316).
When converted, it had a cartridge ejector assembly, but that is missing.
Thanks.
