Originally, rifle barrels were straightened by this method, whereby a skilled workman would look through the bore. 
A cross-hair was painted on a nearby window and the bore was viewed in relation to it. 
Waves, bends or imperfections were seen and the straightener could remove them by tapping with his heavy hammer.

One can only imagine the years of work it took to put these wear grooves on the handle.
