Model 700 Variation
Model 700 Variation
I have a Remington 700 first year production, Ser # 40,xxx. The barrel length is ~20". I see info speaking of 22" and 24" but no listing of a 20". Is this just a "carbine" version? And, why can I not find literature for '62 stating a 20" barrel? If it makes any difference the caliber is .30-06. Also an ADL model.

You might want to check the barrel date codes against the descriptions in this link. It may or may not be a first-year production gun.

You also might want to read this link about the "carbine" versions:

I have personally seen some of the short-barreled versions. The ones I've seen were also ADL versions.

Re: Model 700 Variation
Thanks Den,
It appears the 20" wasn't uncommon, on first or second year guns. When I first saw it I was taken back, for fear someone had "shortened" the barrel. That is not the case.
Thanks again for the response and info.
