Remington Smoot revolver in 22?
Remington Smoot revolver in 22?
I have received a nickel revolver with E. Remington & Sons Ilion NY Pat W.S. Smoot. Oct 31,1873 on the top of the rib. It appears to be a Smoot #1, but the cylinder is not fluted and it is a 22 caliber. The serial number on the grip is 725. The ball on the end of the ejector rod is a smooth round ball. The gun is in very good condition. I've been able to find info on the .30 and .32 caliber Smoots but nothing on a .22 or a smooth (non fluted) cylinder. Anyone have any info?

Can you pop the cylinder and take a picture of the end(s)?
Barrel front and breech.
What little I can see still looks like a 30 or 32.

It is definitely a 22. It does appear the barrel has been lined. The flat plate next to the cylinder appears to have been made to fit at the rear of the cyclinder.

Re: Remington Smoot revolver in 22?
Cool looks like the cylinders are sleeved as well, does it function well?

Hi diamond V,
Just ran into your post, and noted that # on cylinder is 576, not matching serial on the gun frame you gave. The cylinder is stamped in the same manner as the S&W model 1, 2nd issue guns, which were 22 short caliber 7 shot. The cylinder matches in appearance this early S&W model, and that's what I believe it is. Someone did a nice job at turning a 32 smoot into a 22, probably because of the 32 ammo being obsolete. Curious as to whether it functions and shoots well.
Best,
John

The work on the gun was done fairly well. The gun will fire but only if you hand index the cylinder. The backing plate blocks the hand mechanism which had been removed.

I am actually selling the gun for one of my customers. Still trying to figure out a value considering it's current state. Any offers or price suggestions?
